The penetrating flaw detection operation is simple, does not require complex equipment, is low in cost, and has an intuitive defect display. It has a fairly high sensitivity and can find defects with a width of less than 1 micron. This method is widely used in the inspection of ferrous and non-ferrous metal forgings, castings, welded parts, machined parts, and surface defects of ceramics, glass, plastics, etc., because the inspection object is not restricted by the structure and chemical composition of the material. It can detect defects such as cracks, cold partitions, inclusions, looseness, folds, pores, etc.; but it is not suitable for powder metallurgy parts with loose structures and other porous materials. Figure 1 shows the thermal stress cracks on the shell found by the coloring method; Figure 2 shows the weld cracks found by the fluorescence method.

The advantages of penetrating flaw detection are

1, the defect display is intuitive;

2, higher sensitivity;

3, the inspection is not affected by the geometry of the workpiece and the direction of the defect;

4. No water and electricity, especially suitable for on-site inspection.

The disadvantage of penetrant inspection is

1. The nature of the defect can only be roughly determined.

2, the detection speed is relatively slow.

3. The waste liquid of penetrant cannot be discharged directly, and the processing cost is high.
